Kangal Harinath Memorial Museum is located in Kumarkhali Upazila of Kushtia District, Bangladesh. It is built to preserve the memory of the pioneer of rural journalism, Kangal Harinath Majumder.

Who is Kangal Harinath Majumder

Kangal Harinath Majumder was a Bengali journalist, writer, social reformer. He is a shining star in the history of nineteenth century Bengali literature, culture and journalism. Kangal Harinath Majumdar was born on July 22, 1833 in Kundupara village of Kumarkhali upazila in Kushtia district of Bangladesh. He received his primary education in the village school.

In 1873 Kangal Harinath Majumdar established MN Press at Kumarkhali. From this press he published a weekly called Grambarta Prakashika. This newspaper was the first rural newspaper in Bengali language. He used to write about the rural life, culture, and social problems of Bengal in the Grambarta Prakashika newspaper. The magazine quickly became popular and became known as the pioneer of rural journalism in Bengal.

Kangal Harinath Majumdar died on April 16, 1896 in Kushtia. He has made an outstanding contribution to Bengali literature, culture, journalism, and social reform. His life and work is a bright chapter in the history of Bengal.

Kangal Harinath Memorial Museum

Kangal Harinath Memorial Museum was opened on December 9, 2017. The construction cost is around 11 crores taka. The museum has two floors and an area of about 4000 square feet. The ground floor of the museum has a conference room, a library and an auditorium. The conference room can accommodate up to 100 people. The library has about 500 books. The auditorium can seat 150 people. There is an exhibition hall on the second floor of the museum. This place highlights the life and work of Kangal Harinath Majumdar. The room displays historical printing presses used by him, Bengali characters, photographs, manuscripts and other artefacts.

The museum is open daily from 9:00 to 17:00. Entry fee is 10 taka for adult, 5 taka for children, 100 taka for tourists from SAARC countries and 500 taka for other foreign tourists.
